Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) becomes first Malaysian university to launch bachelor’s programme in quantum

UTeM has also established what it describes as the country’s first dedicated physical laboratory for teaching, learning and research in quantum computing.

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has introduced a new Bachelor of Computer Science (Quantum Computing Technology), becoming the first university in Malaysia to offer an undergraduate programme dedicated to quantum computing.

UTeM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Ts. Dr. Massila Kamalrudin, said the programme’s approval marked another significant milestone for the university after its proposal passed the Screening Meeting in early July. She explained that the programme was designed to produce graduates with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in quantum computing technology, addressing the country’s need for specialists in a rapidly expanding strategic technology field.

“The offering of this program places UTeM as the first higher education institution in Malaysia to pioneer undergraduate studies in the field of applied quantum computing technology. It also reflects the university’s commitment to empowering education based on future technology as well as supporting the national agenda to develop highly skilled talent in the digital and advanced technology fields,” she said.

To support the programme’s implementation, UTeM has also established what it describes as the country’s first dedicated physical laboratory for teaching, learning and research in quantum computing. The facility contains 23 quantum computer units with capacities of two and three qubits, providing students with opportunities to conduct experiments and practical training using real quantum hardware.

As part of its effort to strengthen its position as a regional hub for quantum technology education, UTeM is expanding its international collaboration network with institutions in the United States. The university is engaging with the University of Buffalo, University of Albany and the University of Texas Dallas.

Massila said the strategic collaboration aims to enhance curriculum development, research, talent development, academic mobility and the exchange of expertise in quantum computing technology. She made the remarks following a recent working visit to the United States, during which detailed discussions were held with the universities to explore long-term collaboration opportunities. The visit also included the participation of Hazman Hasib, Director of the Corporate and Global Strategic Relations Centre (Uglobe).

Commenting further on the new programme, Massila said that in line with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) approach, the curriculum emphasises practical learning, problem-solving and industrial applications to ensure graduates are equipped with high competence and meet the needs of the country’s technology sector.

“The first cohort is expected to involve 60 students who will begin their studies in the near future before graduating in 2030 as the first graduates of Quantum Computing Technology from UTeM,” she said.

She added that the initiative is expected to strengthen UTeM’s position as a leader in technical education and advanced technology in Malaysia, and serve as a catalyst for the development of research, innovation and the broader quantum computing industry ecosystem in the country.
